Deliberate Tennis will show you how to (1) clarify what you currently value about your tennis life and to incorporate these values into a deliberate-practice training program, (2) develop and maintain a "growth mindset" to achieve your goals, (3) incorporate key concepts from the behavioral sciences to improve your game, (4) develop optimum levels of attention and concentration during point play, (5) cope with negative thoughts and emotions, (6) formulate and implement strategic game plans, and (7) maximize your time on the court to reach your potential as a tennis player. Deliberate Tennis is an indispensable guide for tennis players of all ages and levels, coaches, and parents of aspiring players.

A lively and engaging book, even if you are not a tennis enthusiast. Dr. Himadi’s use of history and analysis brings the tennis greats to life and sheds light on their most perplexing habits. Have you ever wondered why some of them had strange rituals, or exploded on the court, or fizzled out so quickly? Ever wonder how you sabotage your own performance? Himadi answers these questions. Oddly enough, as you read the book you begin to wonder is Himadi writing about tennis or life? The answer is both, but if you want good life skills applied specifically to tennis, this is the book. You can use the skills any way you want. After reading the book I modified my approach to our granddaughter to encourage a growth orientation.Given the recent breakthroughs in genetics, Dr. Himadi’s analysis of tennis skill: nature vs. nurture is insightful, surprising, and brilliant. He rounds it out with interesting examples.
I know Dr. Himadi and his suggestions come from mature skilled work as a psychologist and a tennis player. They are practical, reasonable, and theoretically sound. In his work as a psychologist I have seen him consistently transform the most impaired humans with skill, care, and grace. This is his genius, and his book can help you… with tennis or life.
Deliberately yours,
Dr. G

Deliberate Tennis A Player Guide to Maximum Effectiveness On and Off the Court PhD Bill Himadi 9780692510087 Books Reviews
Deliberate Tennis is a masterpiece! It is a rare combination of amusing anecdotes with inspiring psychological advice for your tennis game. I am giving this as a holiday present to all of my tennis playing friends and family members.
Finally, I've found a book to bring me to the next level in my game! This book isn't just about tennis but about how a deliberate effort can bring about predictable success. Written with humour and vivid accounts from the author's own life experience, this book is a great tool for any sportsman.
A must read for every tennis player or parent/coach whose child is into tennis or other sports. Deliberate Tennis cuts through the psychobabble of most books on the mental aspects of the game and presents the essentials of how to become an accomplished player. The author weaves together his passions - tennis, history, and psychology -- over the decades in this book. His anecdotes are informative and entertaining. The author insightfully applies third-wave psychological principles, especially mindfulness skills, ACT, and (fixed vs. growth) mindsets, to improve one's game or bring about expert-level performance. I found the tips and take-aways from this book practical and helpful. Most definitely worth the purchase. This may well be the single best book on Tennis since Winning Ugly.
I came across this fascinating book through a friend and even as a non-tennis player, this was an eye-opening and intriguing read about methods to bettering yourself. The most interesting aspects come in the form of historical evidence about masters improving their game. And not just in the tennis realm. Instances of chess players, video gamers, and intellectuals all contribute to the different facets of improvement on a very mental level. I had heard of the "10,000 hours" rule but never had I understood it in such detail. This book opened my mind to varying ways of thinking about whatever task it is I wish to be better at. I myself am a runner and when I am out there, I play many a mental game with myself to overcome the pain, the anguish, the feeling of not being good enough. The chapters of this book helped me to think outside the box - on a higher plane - about the ways I can perform better in training runs and races. I'd recommend this to anyone looking to excel in their lives.
Great book! Enjoyed the stories and found the psychology relevant.
Enjoyed this book on many levels. I read it, my wife read it, and my son read it, and we all learned from it.
It's a fun read with some great anecdotes. I'd recommend it it to any tennis player that wants a plan for improving your tennis. Even if you don't play tennis, you'll find it fun to read! David Reid
