The first and most influential stage version of Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886) was created by Richard Mansfield in 1887. The changes Mansfield made to the original story - including the addition of female characters, a more sympathetic Dr. Jekyll and a more significant role for Inspector Newcomen - would become standard for subsequent stage and screen adaptations. An authoritative, collated version of the Mansfield script charts the evolution of his play through its Boston, New York, and London productions. Also included are competing scripts by Bandmann and Carr. Biographical information is presented for Mansfield, Thomas Russell Sullivan (who wrote dramatizations of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in 1908 and 1912), and Stevenson. Special attention is given to American theater and popular entertainment during the late nineteenth century, and to the Jack the Ripper murders, which led to the closing of Mansfield's London production. Included in the appendices are reviews of the various productions and transcripts of Mansfield interviews.

I stumbled upon this book in the long list of free Kindle books that is changing every day. Most of that stuff is junk. But there are gems among the trash. This book is one of them. It has so much to it that it is hard to put it one category. It includes a few different scripts for various versions of late 19th century theatrical versions of Jekyll & Hyde. The starring position (pun intended) is held by Richard Mansfield, the actor and leader of a theatrical troupe that first presented a theatrical version of Robert Louis Stevenson's great story. Mansfield became a superstar actor, here in the US. Hard for us to believe now because most of us never heard of him. But he was a household word in the latter part of the 19th century through the first decade of the 20th.
He actually asked & received R.L. Stevenson's permission to turn the story into a play. And this book tells many different stories in getting to Mansfield's telling Stevenson's story.
To be fair, I am still reading this book, I am about 3/5 through, mostly it is just the plays themselves I have left, and the appendices.
But this book is both interesting and fills in some important pieces in various historic puzzles. These puzzles include: The Jack the Ripper murders (which occurred while Mansfield was performing his play in London), the fleshing out of some parts of the Jekyll & Hyde mythos that most of us know from the movies (hint: they didn't exist before Mansfield's play).
Also, we learn more about Stevenson's life, as well as Thomas Sullivan, Mansfield's co-creator of the play. He actually wrote the original version, but Mansfield made significant changes as well as so much of the stagecraft and performance being responsible for the finished product.
This book has a lot to too it, but in the best way possible. It well written and I would easily pay $10 for this. The authors offered it as a Christmas present for 2 days for free. And that really is a gift. There is at this writing 1 and only one used copy of this book on Amazon right now. It is going for $423. While I don't think I would pay that much for it, even if it was easy for me to do so, this is a valuable and fascinating book.
There are a few typos, but the formatting & most of the text is easy to read. There is also a complete bibliography and endnotes. This book is a 1st class act. Fans of horror, drama, classic lit, Victorian era history, and the Jack the Ripper case will find something of interest here.

Jekyll and Hyde Dramatized edition by Martin A Danahay Alex Chisholm Arts Photography eBooks Reviews
Mr. Chisholm's book on the theatrical Jekyll and Hyde is long overdue. For over a century, theater and film readers have heard how the great actor Richard Mansfield's creation of Mr. Hyde, on stage, was mesmerizing. Here at last are the supporting facts.
The book is filled with reviews, annotations, and THREE scripts of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson tale.
Mr. Chisholm's exhaustive research is much appreciated.
Now if I could only get someone to mount a new production of this show for me....
