Part One portrays the last week of life for a young girl, Ursula Sunshine Assaid, and how society failed to save her from violent, fatal child abuse. Teachers and neighbors were blind to her private hell...nobody took the simple steps that would have prevented her excruciating death. This story is unique and powerful because it gives us the point of view of the child in her final days of life.

Part One energizes the reader to become a soldier in defense of the helpless while Part Two provides current practical information and guidance to help identify, prevent, report and defend against child abuse. This book is a must-read for students from middle school to grad school, educators, parents, grandparents, law enforcement, the judiciary and all others who would protect the innocent and foster a more healthy and just society.

There were times while reading this book that I found myself struggling and even becoming emotional, but I would recommend it to anyone. It tells Ursual's story in a meaningful way; I will remember her story for the rest of my life. It's hard to say "I love it". This was really sad. I cried all the way through. Sometimes it was overwhelming and I had to put it down for a few days. We need more child advocates.
The story itself was really good....made me cry....but as I was reading the book parts of it is missing....I had to guess what happened....like a few sentences were missing in paragraphs...and in the informational section at the back of the book a lot of information was missing....it would start to list signs of child abuse and it was not complete...whole paragraphs seemed to be missing....if the whole book was intact I would have given it ten stars.
I rated this kindle version of the book 4 stars because of the several type-o's going on in there, but it is not a giant deal because the integrity of the book has remained the same. I grew up in Orlando, so this book was on our must-read list 20 years ago, and the chilling story has stuck with me ever since. My entire family (including my children, ages 5 & 8) gathered around while we each took part in reading the story aloud, and we all had tears streaming down our faces reading about what that poor girl, Ursula Sunshine had to go through. We read it together in order to have an open dialogue regarding child abuse - a subject that should not be ignored, no matter how uncomfortable.
I first heard about this horrific crime when I was 6 years old, I read the book when I was 13. Now 27 years later I am still thinking about Ursula, it saddens me that no one stopped it, no one saved her! I am now a Pre k teacher, and make sure to protect every child I come in contact with, make sure they are loved, fed, clean, cared for. If anything gives me a red flag or uneasy feeling, I report it! I would rather be safe than to have this ever happen to another child! Ursula will always remain in my heart and on my mind! Rip sweet little angel
This is such a heartbreaking story, but I'm happy that somebody took the time to speak for Ursula. This happened very close to my home town growing up and it just amazes me how many people turned their heads and could look the other way while this poor girl suffered so horribly. Hopefully, this will help open peoples eyes to the signs of abuse and just maybe help prevent another child from experiencing the same treatment or demise.
I bought this book for class. It is a sad book. It was a nessesary purchase and I give it 2 stars because whenever I purchase a book for my Kendall, the electronic format misspells words and leaves out big chunks of text. Often times sentences are left hanging and I miss a lot of the meanings because of this. I would buy hard copies until this problem is resolved.
This was a required book when I was in school since I was local to where this occurred. It’s a tough book to get through with the descriptions of what a five-year-old girl endured her final week of being abused, but this story is something everyone should read so if you ever see something similar going on in your neighborhood maybe you will recognize it for what’s really going on and help another child avoid Ursula’s tragic fate.
There were times while reading this book that I found myself struggling and even becoming emotional, but I would recommend it to anyone. It tells Ursual's story in a meaningful way; I will remember her story for the rest of my life. It also provides information regarding child abuse, such as warning signs and what an individual can legally do in order to help a child who is being abused.
